A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of November 2009 as "National Native

2

American Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The first Native American Day was celebrated in May

4

1916 in New York; and

5

WHEREAS, In 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a joint

6

congressional resolution designating November 1990 as "National

7

American Indian Heritage Month"; and

8

WHEREAS, Native Americans were the indigenous inhabitants of

9

the land that now constitutes the United States; and

10

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania was once inhabited by many Native

11

American tribes. The tribes consisted of the Delawares, an

12

Algonquian-speaking tribe that lived at the basin of the

13

Delaware River. This tribe merged with the Algonquian-speaking

14

Mahicans, a tribe related to the Mohegans of Connecticut. The

Conoys and the Nanticokes also merged with the Delawares. The

2

Susquehannocks were another Algonquian-speaking tribe, who lived

3

along the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and Maryland; and

4

WHEREAS, Native American tribal governments developed the

5

fundamental principles of freedom of speech and separation of

6

powers that helped form the foundation of the United States

7

Government; and

8

WHEREAS, Native Americans have traditionally exhibited a

9

respect for the finiteness of natural resources through a

10

reverence for the earth; and

11

WHEREAS, Native Americans served with valor in all of

12

America's wars beginning with the Revolutionary War through the

13

conflict in the Persian Gulf, and often the percentage of Native

14

Americans who served exceeded significantly the percentage of

15

Native Americans in the population of the United States as a

16

whole; and

17

WHEREAS, Native Americans have made distinct and important

18

contributions to the United States and the rest of the world in

19

many fields, including agriculture, medicine, music, language

20

and art; and

21

WHEREAS, Native Americans deserve to be recognized for their

22

individual contributions to the United States as local and

23

national leaders, artists, athletes and scholars; therefore be

24

it

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate

26

November 2009 as "National Native American Heritage Month" in

27

Pennsylvania.
