A RESOLUTION

  

1

Recognizing the month of January 2010 as "Stalking Awareness

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, January 2010 will be observed nationally as the

4

third annual "Stalking Awareness Month"; and

5

WHEREAS, More than one million women and almost 400,000 men

6

are victims of stalkers annually; and

7

WHEREAS, Most frequently, stalkers are former intimate

8

partners and abusers of the person being stalked, and 76% of

9

persons who have been murdered by their stalker have at one time

10

been an intimate partner of that stalker; and

11

WHEREAS, Stalking victims experience lost time from work,

12

anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction and severe depression in

13

significantly higher numbers than the general public; and

14

WHEREAS, Stalking pervasively occurs in neighborhoods, on

college campuses and in workplace environments and is a crime

2

under the laws of all 50 states, the District of Columbia and

3

Federal statute; and

4

WHEREAS, Notwithstanding these facts, awareness of the

5

pervasiveness and detrimental social impact of stalking is

6

minimal; and

7

WHEREAS, To raise social awareness, January 2010 has been set

8

aside nationwide as "Stalking Awareness Month"; therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

10

month of January 2010 as "Stalking Awareness Month" in

11

Pennsylvania.
