A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of October 18 through 24, 2009, as "Good

Chemistry Week" in Pennsylvania in recognition of the

3

dynamism and innovation of the business of chemistry.

4

WHEREAS, This community-based annual event unites businesses,

5

schools and individuals in communicating the importance of

6

chemistry to our quality of life; and

7

WHEREAS, More than 96% of all manufactured goods are directly

8

touched by the business of chemistry, making this industry an

9

essential part of every facet of this nation's economy; and

10

WHEREAS, The business of chemistry is a significant

11

contributor to the economy of this Commonwealth, employing

12

nearly 47,000 people; and

13

WHEREAS, For every chemistry industry job in Pennsylvania, an

14

additional 4.1 jobs are created within this Commonwealth; and

15

WHEREAS, The business of chemistry in this Commonwealth

16

offers family-sustaining jobs averaging annually more than

17

$79,000; and

18

WHEREAS, The business of chemistry in Pennsylvania provides

support to numerous endowments, foundations and scholarship

2

organizations throughout this Commonwealth; and

3

WHEREAS, The business of chemistry is a leader in safety,

4

with a safety performance record 4.5 times above the average of

5

all other United States manufacturing industries combined; and

6

WHEREAS, The business of chemistry is the nation's largest

7

investor in private sector funding of research and development

8

initiatives, with chemistry industry scientists and researchers

9

accounting for 1 in 7 patents filed in the United States every

10

year; and

11

WHEREAS, The evolving science of chemistry is essential to

12

providing alternative energy, enhanced energy conservation,

13

potable drinking water, medicines, protective clothing for

14

emergency, police and military personnel, housing and

15

transportation, as well as other necessities; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

17

week of October 18 through 24, 2009, as "Good Chemistry Week" in

18

Pennsylvania in recognition of the dynamism and innovation of

19

the business of chemistry.
