| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the release and safe return of Josh F. Fattal and |
2 | Shane M. Bauer from Iran to the United States, commending the |
3 | captives for their forbearance and equanimity, and |
4 | pronouncing gratitude to all who supported their release, |
5 | especially the State of Oman. |
6 | WHEREAS, Shane Bauer, Josh Battal and Sarah Shourd intended |
7 | to spend five days visiting the Northern Iraq area on visas from |
8 | Turkey, beginning on July 28, 2009; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Shane Bauer is a freelance journalist raised in |
10 | Onamia, Minnesota, and a graduate of the University of |
11 | California, Berkeley, with a degree in Peace and Conflict |
12 | Studies; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Shane was previously living in Damascus, Syria, and |
14 | had his writings and photographs published in the United States, |
15 | United Kingdom, Middle East and Canada; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Josh Fattal is an environmental activist from Elkins |
17 | Park, Pennsylvania; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In 2004, Josh graduated from the University of |
2 | California, Berkeley, with a degree in Environmental Economics |
3 | from the College of Natural Resources; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Josh worked at the Aprovecho Research Center in |
5 | Cottage Grove, Oregon, where he taught sustainable living |
6 | skills, in addition to taking part in a teaching fellowship |
7 | program with the International Honors Program "Health and |
8 | Community" Study Program in Switzerland, India, China and South |
9 | Africa; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Sarah Shourd was living in Damascus, Syria, prior to |
11 | the detainment and was teaching as part of the Iraqi Student |
12 | Project in Damascus; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Shane, Josh and Sarah were detained on July 31, |
14 | 2009, after crossing the Iran border near Kurdistan and the |
15 | Ahmed Awa Waterfall of Northern Iraq; and |
16 | WHEREAS, All three individuals were accused and convicted of |
17 | espionage and were sentenced to eight years in prison; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Sarah Shourd was released on a $500,000 bail 410 |
19 | days after her captivation due to medical reasons; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal remained in isolation |
21 | during most of their imprisonment and were provided with only 15 |
22 | minutes of phone calls to their families; and |
23 | WHEREAS, The men were not given the letters sent by their |
24 | family members; and |
25 | WHEREAS, Shane and Josh were released to an official from the |
26 | Persian Gulf State of Oman after 781 days of imprisonment at the |
27 | Tehran's Evin Prison on combined bail of $1 million posted by |
28 | Oman; therefore be it |
29 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
30 | release and safe return of Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer to their |

1 | families in the United States, commend the captives for their |
2 | forbearance and equanimity, and pronounce gratitude to all who |
3 | supported their release, especially the State of Oman. |
