| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Declaring October 14, 2011, as "Immaculata University Mighty |
2 | Macs Day" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Immaculata University, located in Malvern and |
4 | formerly Immaculata College, is regarded as the birthplace of |
5 | modern women's college basketball; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The Immaculata Women's Basketball team, known as the |
7 | Mighty Macs, played in six consecutive AIAW Final Fours |
8 | (1972-1977) and won three consecutive national women's college |
9 | basketball championships in 1972, 1973 and 1974; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Those championships were the first national women's |
11 | college basketball championships played in the United States; |
12 | and |
13 | WHEREAS, The Mighty Macs played in the first nationally |
14 | televised regular season women's college basketball game, |
15 | defeating the University of Maryland on January 27, 1975; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The Mighty Macs were the first American women's |
17 | college basketball team to compete outside the United States, |
18 | when it competed in Australia in 1974; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The Immaculata Women's Basketball team set and |
2 | attained the highest standards of excellence, both academically |
3 | and athletically, and is a model worthy of emulation; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The players are trailblazers, whose accomplishments, |
5 | poise and character have lit the way for an ever-increasing |
6 | number of young women to enjoy opportunities to participate in |
7 | college sports; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The team, consisting of Head Coach Cathy Rush, Janet |
9 | Ruch Boltz, Denise Conway Crawford, Janet Young Eline, Theresa |
10 | Shank Grentz (All-American), Nancy Johnston, Barbara Deuble |
11 | Kelly, Tina Krah, Patricia Mulhern Loughran, Judy Marra |
12 | Martelli, Maureen Mooney, Sue Forsyth O'Grady, Patricia Opila, |
13 | Rene Muth Portland (All-American), Betty Ann Hoffman Quinn, Mary |
14 | Scharff (All-American), Marianne Crawford Stanley (All- |
15 | American), Maureen Stuhlman and Marie Liguori Williams, has most |
16 | deservedly earned recognition as one of the most successful |
17 | teams ever in the annals of collegiate athletics; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Premiering on October 14, 2011, the motivating drama |
19 | of the Immaculata women's basketball teams of the 1970s has been |
20 | captured in The Mighty Macs, a Hollywood movie chronicling the |
21 | team's story; therefore be it |
22 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare October |
23 | 14, 2011, as "Immaculata University Mighty Macs Day" in |
24 | Pennsylvania in honor of the Immaculata University Women's |
25 | Basketball team's legendary accomplishments on the court, its |
26 | pioneering role standing tall as the birthplace of modern |
27 | women's college basketball and the progress in women's |
28 | collegiate athletics inspired by the team. |
