| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of October 2011 as "Pennsylvania Fire |
2 | Prevention Month," observing the week of October 9 through |
3 | 15, 2011, as "National Fire Prevention Week," urging all |
4 | Pennsylvanians to protect their homes and families by heeding |
5 | the important safety messages of Fire Prevention Week 2011, |
6 | and to support the many public safety activities and efforts |
7 | of Pennsylvania's fire and emergency services and recognizing |
8 | the efforts of all firefighters, fire service agencies and |
9 | other first responders in preventing and combating fire |
10 | dangers. |
11 | WHEREAS, Fires exist as a serious safety concern, both |
12 | locally and nationally; and |
13 | WHEREAS, People face the greatest risk of fire in their |
14 | homes; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Each year, between 2,000 and 3,000 people die in |
16 | house fires in the United States, according to the National Fire |

1 | Protection Association (NFPA), with fire departments in the |
2 | United States responding yearly to more than 360,000 home fires; |
3 | and |
4 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania firefighters and other first responders |
5 | have dedicated their services to prevent the damage, |
6 | destruction, pain and trauma that fires cause families and |
7 | communities through efforts to educate everyone on how to stop |
8 | fires from starting and what protections to follow when one does |
9 | strike; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The NFPA picked the theme "It's Fire Prevention |
11 | Week, Protect your Family from Fire" for the 2011 National Fire |
12 | Prevention Week to remind people of the simple actions they can |
13 | take to keep homes and families safe year-round; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Efforts to promote the theme provide an ideal |
15 | opportunity to educate the public of the danger fires pose in |
16 | homes and throughout our communities; and |
17 | WHEREAS, According to the NFPA, cooking equipment is the |
18 | leading cause of home structure fires and associated injuries |
19 | and the third leading cause of home fire deaths; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Heating and electrical equipment and smoking |
21 | materials are among the leading causes of all reported home |
22 | fires; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Home candle fires reportedly cause a house fire in |
24 | the United States every 30 minutes; and |
25 | WHEREAS, The risk of dying in a home structure fire caused by |
26 | smoking materials rises with age; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Working smoke alarms and automatic fire sprinkler |
28 | systems can reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 80%, |
29 | according to the NFPA; and |
30 | WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's first responders exhibit great |

1 | dedication to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home |
2 | fire injuries through prevention and protection education and |
3 | through their quick response to emergencies; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth have shown |
5 | responsiveness to public education measures and have in the past |
6 | taken personal steps to increase their safety from fire, |
7 | especially in their homes, and residents who have planned and |
8 | practiced a home fire escape plan have a greater likelihood of |
9 | surviving a fire; therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the |
11 | month of October 2011 as "Pennsylvania Fire Prevention Month" |
12 | and observe the week of October 9 through 15, 2011, as "National |
13 | Fire Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania with the theme for each |
14 | being "It's Fire Prevention Week & Month, Protect your Family |
15 | from Fire"; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend all |
17 | firefighters, other first responders and those who provide |
18 | support to them for all their efforts to prevent, fight and stop |
19 | fires; and be it further |
20 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all |
21 | residents, landlords, businesses and other property owners to |
22 | protect their homes, businesses and property by heeding the |
23 | important safety messages of Fire Prevention Week 2011, which |
24 | can be found on the "safety information" link on the NFPA |
25 | Internet website, www.nfpa.org, and to support the many public |
26 | safety activities and efforts of Pennsylvania's fire and |
27 | emergency services. |
