A RESOLUTION

Commending the May 2, 2009, opening of the Children's Hospital

2

of Pittsburgh of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

3

in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh.

4

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of the

5

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is the only

6

hospital in western Pennsylvania devoted exclusively to the care

7

of infants and children; and

8

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC cares

9

for about 600,000 patients each year, with more than 40%

10

receiving medical assistance; and

11

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is

12

enhancing the economic viability of the City of Pittsburgh,

13

Allegheny County and western Pennsylvania with the creation of

14

new, full-time jobs in the hospital and existing or start-up

research companies; and

2

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is an

3

integrated wireless hospital, systematically ensuring rigorous

4

oversight and patient safety; and

5

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is one

6

of only seven pediatric hospitals to achieve a Top Hospital

7

ranking in 2008 in patient safety by the Leapfrog Group; and

8

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is

9

named consistently to elite lists of pediatric health care

10

facilities; and

11

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was

12

selected by the National Institutes of Health as a center for

13

excellence for training the nation's future pediatric leaders in

14

pediatric research; and

15

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has

16

one of this nation's fastest growing pediatric research

17

programs; and

18

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was

19

ranked eighth among children's hospitals in 2006 in funding

20

provided by the National Institutes of Health; and

21

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is an

22

environmentally sustainable pediatric center; and

23

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC's

24

transplantation program, the nation's first, performs more

25

transplants and more kinds of transplants with the highest

26

survival rates nationwide; and

27

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

28

educates and trains 240 future pediatricians each year; and

29

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC's

30

health care professionals are specifically trained to address

the unique needs of sick and injured children; and

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC offers

3

its expertise and promotes community-wide programs at locations

4

throughout western Pennsylvania; and

5

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

6

enhances the patient and family experience through

7

transformation; and

8

WHEREAS, The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is

9

where patients and their families find strength, energy and hope

10

for a promising future; therefore be it

11

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the

12

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of the University of

13

Pittsburgh Medical Center, a nationally and internationally

14

renowned pediatric center, for its outstanding clinical

15

services, medical education and research programs in its new

16

location in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of the City of

17

Pittsburgh.
