A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating the month of September 2011 as "Childhood Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, honoring those young people

3

who have lost their lives to childhood cancer, expressing

4

gratitude to the doctors and nurses who provide special care

5

to patients and families affected by childhood cancer, and

6

encouraging all citizens to join the fight against childhood

7

cancer in this Commonwealth.

8

WHEREAS, Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of

9

children in the United States, killing more children between the

10

ages of one and twenty than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis

11

and AIDS combined, and is the second leading cause of death

during childhood, exceeded only by accidents; and 

2

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 11,210

3

children under 15 years of age will be diagnosed with cancer

4

this year and roughly 1,320 will lose their battle against the

5

disease; and

6

WHEREAS, The potential years of life lost to childhood cancer

7

and the potential years of life saved by treatment exceed all

8

other cancers with the exception of breast cancer; and

9

WHEREAS, Most children cannot be treated at a local hospital,

10

and families must face the disruption of moving for treatment at

11

a regional cancer center; and

12

WHEREAS, Childhood cancer treatment has been called the

13

modern miracle because five-year relative survival has improved

14

markedly over the past 30 years to approximately 80%; and 

15

WHEREAS, There is significant progress that still must be

16

made with regard to childhood cancer treatment, because there

17

are many types of childhood cancer, and some varieties with

18

lower survival rates are still very difficult to treat; and

19

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is a leader in the fight against and

20

treatment of childhood cancer with six Children's Oncology Group

21

hospitals, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, The

22

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Geisinger Medical Center,

23

Lehigh Valley Hospital - Muhlenburg, Hershey Medical Center and

24

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and

25

WHEREAS, Two of only ten institutions in the Pediatric Brain

26

Tumor Consortium are in Pennsylvania, The Children's Hospital of

27

Philadelphia and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and Penn

28

State Hershey Children's Hospital is one of only 11 institutions

29

nationwide in the Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutic

30

Consortium; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

2

month of September 2011 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" in

3

Pennsylvania; and be it further

4

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor those young

5

people who have lost their lives to childhood cancer, express

6

gratitude to the doctors and nurses who provide special care to

7

patients and families affected by childhood cancer, and

8

encourage all citizens to join the fight against childhood

9

cancer in this Commonwealth.
