| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating September 25, 2011, as "Gold Star Mother's Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Throughout this nation's history, the men and women |
4 | of the United States Armed Forces have put the nation's security |
5 | before their own, doing their duty in the face of grave danger; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, During World War I, Service Flags were displayed |
8 | from homes, businesses, schools and churches to indicate, by the |
9 | use of a blue star, each active service member in the United |
10 | States military; and |
11 | WHEREAS, A gold star stitched over a blue star showed the |
12 | nation those who had given their lives for their country and the |
13 | devotion and pride of those left behind; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In 1928, the Gold Star tradition was formalized in |

1 | Washington, DC, by a group of mothers who had lost sons and |
2 | daughters in service to their country and met to form the |
3 | American Gold Star Mothers organization, a nondenominational, |
4 | nonprofit and nonpolitical organization; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's Gold Star Mothers are remarkable |
6 | patriots who serve their communities by demonstrating good |
7 | citizenship, providing support and services to troops and |
8 | veterans and comforting the families whose loved ones have made |
9 | the ultimate sacrifice; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Though they carry a great burden of grief, the |
11 | courageous Gold Star Mothers help ensure that the legacy of this |
12 | nation's fallen heroes will be forever remembered; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The sons and daughters of Pennsylvania's Gold Star |
14 | Mothers have served this nation during World War I, World War |
15 | II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, the war in the |
16 | Balkans, the peacetime attack on the USS Cole by terrorists and |
17 | the conflicts in the Middle East, including Operation Desert |
18 | Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; |
19 | and |
20 | WHEREAS, This nation remembers these young men and women with |
21 | pride and deepest appreciation; and |
22 | WHEREAS, In recognition of the courage of Gold Star Mothers |
23 | the General Assembly, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, |
24 | 1936 (49 Stat. 1895), designated the last Sunday in September as |
25 | "Gold Star Mother's Day," which resolved authorizing and |
26 | requesting that the President of the United States issue a |
27 | proclamation in observance of this day; therefore be it |
28 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize |
29 | September 25, 2011, as "Gold Star Mother's Day" in Pennsylvania |
30 | and honor Pennsylvania's Gold Star Mothers for their great |
