A RESOLUTION

Recognizing April 9 through 17, 2011, as "National Robotics

2

Week" in Pennsylvania and recognizing the contributions of

3

Pennsylvanians in the field of robotics.

4

WHEREAS, The second annual National Robotics Week will be

5

held April 9 through 17, 2011; and

6

WHEREAS, National Robotics Week celebrates the United States

7

as a leader in robotics technology development, educates the

8

public about how robotics technology impacts society, both now

9

and in the future, and inspires students of all ages to pursue

10

careers in robotics and other fields, such as science,

11

technology, engineering and mathematics; and

12

WHEREAS, Robotics technology is a growing industry which

13

creates high-tech jobs in the United States and this

14

Commonwealth; and

15

WHEREAS, Robotics technologies are helping to improve health

care, national defense, homeland security, energy,

2

manufacturing, logistics, transportation, agriculture,

3

education, consumer goods and many other sectors; and

4

WHEREAS, The universities in the Pittsburgh region are

5

collaborating to develop robots to provide important health

6

services to our aging community; and

7

WHEREAS, Robotics provides an exciting, hands-on way for

8

students to learn science, technology, engineering and

9

mathematics; and

10

WHEREAS, More than 248,000 students on 22,475 teams

11

multinationally participated in the For the Inspiration and

12

Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Program

13

in the 2010-2011 season; and

14

WHEREAS, Ninety-seven teams were from Pennsylvania; and

15

WHEREAS, The FIRST Robotics Program will award more than $14

16

million in college scholarships to students in the 2010-2011

17

season; and

18

WHEREAS, Thirty-nine teams competed at the regional FIRST

19

Robotics Competition March 10 through 12, 2011, in Pittsburgh

20

and 57 teams will compete at the regional FIRST Robotics

21

Competition in Philadelphia April 7 through 9, 2011; and

22

WHEREAS, At least seven student teams from across the State

23

will represent Pennsylvania at the FIRST Robotics 2011

24

Competition Championship that will take place April 27 through

25

30, 2011, in St. Louis, Missouri; and

26

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has a strong position of leadership in

27

developing robotic technologies; and

28

WHEREAS, In the aftermath of the nuclear accident at Three

29

Mile Island, scientists from Carnegie Mellon developed several

30

robots that protected the lives of cleanup personnel only a few

miles from the Capitol; and

2

WHEREAS, Today, Pennsylvania is the home of numerous robotic

3

companies, robotic research and student competitions; and

4

WHEREAS, One of the leading organizations, The Technology

5

Collaborative (TTC), has provided early-stage financial support

6

to more than 20 Pennsylvania-based robotics companies since its

7

inception in 2005 to support the growth of our world-class

8

robotics and digital technology industries; and

9

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania companies, employees and researchers

10

could provide important expertise in dealing with some of the

11

world's most challenging crises, including containing nuclear

12

radiation at Japan's earthquake-stricken Fukushima Daiichi

13

nuclear power plant; therefore be it

14

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April 9

15

through 17, 2011, as "National Robotics Week" in Pennsylvania;

16

and be it further

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor those

18

Pennsylvanians who develop lifesaving robots, instruct students

19

about robotics and participate in robotic competitions; and be

20

it further

21

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express pride in

22

the expertise based in Pennsylvania that could provide vital

23

assistance, advice and leadership to our country and to the

24

world in problems that vary from natural and manmade disasters

25

to the challenges of illness and aging.
