A RESOLUTION

Recognizing January 29, 2009, as "Thomas Paine Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine was a leader of the American

4

Revolution, one of the Founding Fathers, a peer of George

5

Washington, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas

6

Jefferson, and he was also one of the most brilliant political

7

philosophers of his time; and

8

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine advocated for and advanced the cause

9

for the American Colonies' independence from Great Britain in

10

1776 with his famous essay "Common Sense" and influenced the

11

wording of the Declaration of Independence; and

12

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine supported the American Revolution

through personal service, his fortune and his inspirational

2

Crisis Papers, which General George Washington ordered to be

3

read aloud to his soldiers, which began with the immortal words

4

"these are the times that try men's souls"; and

5

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine was among the first to promote

6

universal and equal education for boys and girls, the abolition

7

of slavery, the rights of workers, a basic minimum income,

8

equality for women and religious freedom; and

9

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine emigrated from Great Britain to

10

Philadelphia at the invitation of Benjamin Franklin in November

11

1774 and left a lasting effect on this Commonwealth; and

12

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine also contributed to the Pennsylvania

13

Constitution of 1776, which, at the time, was considered radical

14

and controversial in that it proclaimed in detail the rights of

15

citizens, drastically reduced the executive branch and expanded

16

the voting franchise to all taxpaying free men; and

17

WHEREAS, Thomas Paine was also an intellectual leader in the

18

French Revolution with his famous essays "The Rights of Man" in

19

1791 and "The Age of Reason" in 1794; and

20

WHEREAS, His life and work continue to inspire those who seek

21

liberty and democracy all over the world; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize January

23

29, 2009, as "Thomas Paine Day" in Pennsylvania, in honor of

24

Thomas Paine's indelible contributions to our liberty and

25

republican form of government; and be it further

26

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all citizens

27

and elementary and secondary schools to commemorate the life and

28

service of Thomas Paine and to observe that day with appropriate

29

honors and ceremonies.
