                      Senate Resolution 201

Sponsored by Senator STEINER HAYWARD; Senators BATES, BOQUIST,
  STARR, WHITSETT

  Whereas Alexander Stork, of Klamath Falls and a senior at
Klamath Union High School, and Chloe Staten, of Medford and an
eighth grader at Talent Middle School, were named Oregon's top
youth volunteers for 2012 by the Prudential Spirit of Community
Awards; and
  Whereas Noelani Gonzales, of Cornelius and a junior at Glencoe
High School, Meghana Kalavar, of Portland and a senior at Jesuit
High School, Savannah Loberger, of Hillsboro and a junior at
Hillsboro High School, and Zachary Odegard, of Dallas and a
freshman at Dallas High School, were recognized as distinguished
finalists for the 2012 awards; and
  Whereas Alexander Stork won the award for co-founding a youth
advisory board that supports and promotes the local activities of
the statewide child literacy program, Start Making a Reader
Today, and for contributing to two successful community-wide
events where Alexander and other board members dressed as
superheroes and characters from children's storybooks in order to
recruit volunteer readers for the literacy program and to
demonstrate to kids how exciting reading can be; and
  Whereas Chloe Staten, a surviving cancer patient, won the award
for her public service toward children with cancer, for sharing
her story on, and fielding calls for, the Children's Miracle
Network Radiothon, for organizing special events for hospitalized
children, and for raising money for children with cancer and
speaking at public events to motivate others to raise money for
children with cancer, including at a relay event where she
motivated 1,500 children to participate in a fundraiser for a
children's hospital; and
  Whereas Noelani Gonzales was recognized as a distinguished
finalist for assisting victims of the tsunami that devastated
Japan in March 2011 by selling T-shirts printed with the logo '
Hope for Japan' and donating $2,000 to Medical Teams
International; and
  Whereas Meghana Kalavar was recognized as a distinguished
finalist for raising over $5,000 in 'Dance For a Cause' to
support the building of a school in rural India and for
conducting additional drives for school supplies that she
delivered in person last summer; and
  Whereas Savannah Loberger was recognized as a distinguished
finalist for creating a day camp, Girls Get IT (Innovative
Technology), an all-girl Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math day camp, and for raising $5,000 in support of that camp;
and
  Whereas Zachary Odegard was recognized as a distinguished
finalist for spending the past four years visiting schools to
recruit walkers for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
and for serving as the youth chair for the relay event; and
  Whereas each of these Oregon youths, through their selfless
acts of service, has greatly improved the lives of others; and

  Whereas their actions and dedication show how young people can
make a difference and can inspire other young people to also make
a difference; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Oregon:

  That we, the members of the Senate of the Seventy-sixth
Legislative Assembly, express our gratitude for and recognize,
honor and celebrate on behalf of all Oregonians the service of
each of these Oregon youths; and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
Alexander Stork, Chloe Staten, Noelani Gonzales, Meghana Kalavar,
Savannah Loberger and Zachary Odegard.
