77th OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--2013 Regular Session Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 6 Sponsored by Senators SHIELDS, BURDICK; Senator ROSENBAUM, Representative WILLIAMSON Whereas William E. Connor, M.D., was born on September 14, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree after serving in the United States Army Signal Corps in Hawaii during World War II; and Whereas after 14 years on the faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Iowa College of Medicine, including seven years as director of the Clinical Research Center, William E. Connor moved to Portland in 1975 and became a faculty member in the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University; and Whereas William E. Connor was a physician scientist and a pioneer in diet and heart disease research, studying dietary cholesterol, omega-3 fats, changing eating habits and diseases of sterol metabolism; and Whereas William E. Connor was devoted to his patients at Oregon Health and Science University, the Neighborhood Health Clinic and the Wallace Medical Clinic; and Whereas William E. Connor worked tirelessly on many social justice issues, including promoting racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, advocating for peace during the Vietnam War, serving on multiple City Club research groups, two of which studied early childhood development and the minimum wage, and working to alleviate homelessness and poverty by supporting both social service agencies and public policy proposals meant to help change conditions that result in homelessness and poverty; and Whereas William E. Connor worked with Iowans Against the Death Penalty from 1962 until the death penalty was repealed in Iowa in 1965 and continued working to oppose the death penalty after moving to Oregon as a chief petitioner of the Life for a Life ballot initiative effort and chair emeritus of Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty; and Whereas William E. Connor was in constant contact with legislators to promote passage of policies to help the disadvantaged; and Whereas William E. Connor supported the Friends of Marquam Nature Park to promote the development of new trails, and was also a supporter of the Nature Conservancy; and Whereas William E. Connor was an avid bike rider and climber, having climbed Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens; and Whereas William E. Connor was a devoted family man who instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of books, hiking, biking, camping, gardening and especially a passion for helping others; and Whereas William E. Connor passed away on October 25, 2009, leaving behind his wife, Sonja, his five children, eight Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 6 (SCR 6-INTRO) Page 1 grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon: That we, the members of the Seventy-seventh Legislative Assembly, honor William E.
