76th OREGON LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY--2011 Regular Session Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 17 Sponsored by Senator KRUSE, Representative ROBLAN; Senator VERGER Whereas Andrew 'Andy' Jackson was born on December 16, 1944, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, and passed away on February 1, 2011; and Whereas Andy Jackson graduated from Monitor High School in Fitzgerald in 1963 and joined the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War; and Whereas upon his military discharge in 1969, Andy Jackson moved to Santa Rosa, California, where he held a variety of jobs, including managing a sporting goods store and a local winery; and Whereas Andy Jackson moved to Coos County in 1974 and worked for the Department of Transportation before joining the Coos County Sheriff's Office in 1977 as a deputy; and Whereas Andy Jackson was promoted through the ranks to become jail commander; and Whereas Andy Jackson was elected to the office of sheriff in 1998, a position he held until his retirement in December 2010; and Whereas Andy Jackson was the first black sheriff elected in the State of Oregon; and Whereas Andy Jackson was elected to serve as a Coos County commissioner in November 2010, and he was less than one month into his first term at the time of his death; and Whereas Andy Jackson married the love of his life, Linda Thurman, on October 15, 1982, and they spent their married life in Coquille, where they were very involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren; and Whereas Andy Jackson was an active member of his community, serving on the Coquille City Council from 1997 to 1999, on the board of directors of the Coquille Public Library and as a member of the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association; and Whereas Andy Jackson was a member and past president of the Coos County Republican Party and was chosen as Republican Man of the Year in 2009; and Whereas Andy Jackson also was a member of the Rotary Club of Myrtle Point, the Coquille Elks Lodge and the Coquille Masonic Lodge and previously had been a member of the American Red Cross, the Human Rights Coalition, the Coos County Commission on Children and Families and the Coquille Lions Club; and Whereas Andy Jackson liked to golf, fish and hunt and enjoyed relaxing at home while watching Western movies or soap operas; and Whereas Andy Jackson's greatest joy in life was spending time with and attending the activities of his children and grandchildren, of whom he was very proud; and Whereas Andy Jackson is survived by his wife, Linda, their six children and their 15 grandchildren; and Whereas Andy Jackson was a respected leader and member of his community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him; now, therefore, Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 17 (SCR 17-INTRO) Page 1 Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon: That we, the members of the Seventy-sixth Legislative Assembly, send our condolences to the family of Andrew 'Andy ' Jackson and express our gratitude and appreciation for his dedicated service to the community; and be it further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Andrew 'Andy' Jackson as an expression of our condolences. ---------- Adopted by Senate May 31, 2011 ---------------------------------- Robert Taylor, Secretary of Senate ---------------------------------- Peter Courtney, President of Senate Adopted by House June 6, 2011 ---------------------------------- Bruce Hanna, Speaker of House ---------------------------------- Arnie Roblan, Speaker of House Enrolled Senate Concurrent Resolution 17 (SCR 17-INTRO) Page 2
