A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To declare May 2013 as Mental Health Awareness Month.1


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, Ohioans of every race, creed, socioeconomic 2
position, and location are among those who suffer from mental 3
health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder, 4
depression, and bipolar disorder; and5

       WHEREAS, Prejudice and discrimination based on mental health 6
conditions too often lead to shame, stigma, and alienation; and7

       WHEREAS, The United States Centers for Disease Control and 8
Prevention reports that suicide is a leading cause of death of 9
people of all ages, but particularly of teens and young adults; 10
and11

       WHEREAS, With effective treatment, individuals with mental 12
health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives; and13

       WHEREAS, Increased awareness of the toll of mental health 14
disorders and the benefits of treatment can lead to truthful 15
conversations an effective way of reducing the stigma of mental 16
health conditions; now therefore be it17

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly 18
of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, declare May 19
2013, as "Mental Health Awareness Month" throughout the State of 20
Ohio; and be it further21

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly 22
authenticated copies of this resolution to the news media of Ohio.23
