To urge Congress to enact House Resolution 2070 | 1 |
requiring the installation in the area of the | 2 |
World War II Memorial in Washington D.C., a | 3 |
suitable plaque or an inscription with the words | 4 |
that President Franklin D. Roosevelt prayed with | 5 |
the nation on June 6, 1944. | 6 |
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO:
WHEREAS, On June 6, 1944, the United States Armed Forces and | 7 |
their allies conducted the largest amphibious landing in world | 8 |
history in an effort to liberate mainland Europe from Nazi | 9 |
occupation during World War II; and | 10 |
WHEREAS, On June 6, 1944, United States President Franklin D. | 11 |
Roosevelt, speaking to the American people, offered the following | 12 |
prayer: | 13 |
"My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about | 14 |
the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United | 15 |
States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and | 16 |
greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. | 17 |
And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in | 18 |
prayer: | 19 |
Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have | 20 |
set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, | 21 |
our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering | 22 |
humanity. | 23 |
Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, | 24 |
stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. | 25 |
They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and | 26 |
hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. | 27 |
Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again | 28 |
and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness | 29 |
of our cause, our sons will triumph. | 30 |
They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without | 31 |
rest-until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise | 32 |
and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war. | 33 |
For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They | 34 |
fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. | 35 |
They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and | 36 |
tolerance and good will among all Thy people. They yearn but for | 37 |
the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home. | 38 |
Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive | 39 |
them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom. | 40 |
And for us at home -- fathers, mothers, children, wives, | 41 |
sisters, and brothers of brave men overseas -- whose thoughts and | 42 |
prayers are ever with them--help us, Almighty God, to rededicate | 43 |
ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great | 44 |
sacrifice. | 45 |
Many people have urged that I call the Nation into a single | 46 |
day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire | 47 |
is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance | 48 |
of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is | 49 |
spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to | 50 |
our efforts. | 51 |
Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to | 52 |
redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the | 53 |
material support of our armed forces. | 54 |
And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to | 55 |
bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons | 56 |
wheresoever they may be. | 57 |
And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in | 58 |
our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let | 59 |
not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts | 60 |
of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment | 61 |
let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose. | 62 |
With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of | 63 |
our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial | 64 |
arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our | 65 |
sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a | 66 |
peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace | 67 |
that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards | 68 |
of their honest toil. | 69 |
Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen"; and | 70 |
WHEREAS, House Resolution 2070, introduced in Congress on | 71 |
June 1, 2011, requires the installation in the area of the World | 72 |
War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., a suitable plaque or an | 73 |
inscription with the words that President Franklin D. Roosevelt | 74 |
prayed with the nation; now therefore be it | 75 |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of | 76 |
Representatives of the 129th General Assembly of the State of | 77 |
Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, urge Congress to enact House | 78 |
