Recognizes May 1, 2018 as "Purebred Dog Day" in NJ.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution recognizing May 1, 2018 as "Purebred Dog Day" in New Jersey.

Whereas, Humans have enjoyed the companionship and assistance of dogs since before recorded history; and

Whereas, Over time, humans selectively bred dogs for certain physical and behavioral traits, which made the dogs desirable and useful for a number of tasks such as hunting, retrieving, and herding, and resulted in the myriad of purebred dog breeds  that are known and loved today; and

Whereas, For instance, the Labrador  Retriever, with its short, dense, weather-resistant coat and a thick, tapering tail, was bred for retrieving fish and game out of cold waters; and the German Shepherd, with its agility, speed, and stealth, was bred to be the ideal animal herder; and

Whereas, Today, there are over 350 breeds of dog worldwide, and the American Kennel Club recognizes more than 180 breeds; and

Whereas, Purebred dogs work alongside humans as search and rescue dogs, service dogs, disease detection dogs, police dogs, conservation dogs, livestock guardians, therapy dogs, and guardians of homes and property; and

Whereas, Purebred dogs provide unparalleled service to the blind, deaf, and disabled as guide and service dogs, and are the leading choice of service dog breeding programs because of their heritable intelligence and other desirable and predictable qualities; and

Whereas, Purebred dogs also work alongside the men and women of the United States Armed Forces in combat and in peacetime, and perform vital tasks such as sniffing for bombs; and

Whereas, Breed instinct enables many purebred dogs to readily serve as avalanche dogs, trackers and trailers, herders, controllers of vermin, water rescuers, carting and sledding dogs, retrievers, protectors, hunters, and bird dogs; and

Whereas, The friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited temperament of purebred dogs like the golden retriever and Irish setter make them excellent companion and family dogs; and

Whereas, Dogs of purebred and mixed heritage should all be valued, but the purpose-bred dog and the predictability of its breed should be cherished and preserved; and

Whereas, Responsible breeders of purebred dogs dedicate themselves to improving the health and well-being of dogs and preserving unique breeds of dogs; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House recognizes May 1, 2018 as Purebred Dog Day in New Jersey in grateful recognition of purebred dogs and the many services and the companionship these dogs provide.

     2.    This House honors the dedicated and responsible breeders in the State who work to improve the health and well-being of purebred dogs and preserve these unique dog breeds for future generations.

     3.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the American Kennel Club.

STATEMENT

This resolution would recognize May 1, 2018 as "Purebred Dog Day" in New Jersey, in grateful recognition of purebred dogs and the many services and companionship they provide.

Purebred dogs work alongside humans as search and rescue dogs, service dogs, disease detection dogs, police dogs, conservation dogs, livestock guardians, therapy dogs, and guardians of homes and property.  They provide unparalleled service to the blind, deaf, and disabled as guide and service dogs, and are the leading choice of service dog breeding programs because of their heritable intelligence and other desirable and predictable qualities.  Purebred dogs also work alongside the men and women of the United States Armed Forces in combat and in peacetime, and perform vital tasks such as sniffing for bombs.  The friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited temperament of certain purebred dogs makes them excellent companion and family dogs.  While dogs of purebred and mixed heritage should all be valued, the purpose-bred dog and the predictability of its breed should be cherished and preserved.
