Urges expeditious disposition of crimes involving guns.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution strongly urging the expeditious disposition of crimes involving guns and other dangerous weapons.

Whereas, The increasing number of violent crimes committed with guns and other dangerous weapons poses a serious threat to every resident of the State, especially residents of our urban areas where these crimes are most prevalent; and

Whereas, This threat indicates the importance of developing an alternative court process to expedite the just resolution of these serious crimes; and

Whereas, To expedite the prompt and just disposition of such matters, judges, prosecutors, and public defenders with knowledge and experience in criminal procedures and sentencing should be assigned to an alternative court process to preside over, prosecute, and defend, respectively, crimes involving guns and other dangerous weapons; and

Whereas, Establishing an alternative court process may lead to the prompt, consistent and just disposition of these crimes and secure safer communities; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The Senate strongly urges the Attorney General and the Public Defender to expedite the disposition of crimes involving guns and other dangerous weapons through the judicious deployment of the resources of their respective offices.

     2.    The Senate also strongly urges the New Jersey Judiciary to develop an alternative process to expedite the disposition of crimes involving guns and other dangerous weapons and to assign judges and staff appropriately to implement the process.

     3.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary thereof, shall be transmitted to the Attorney General, the Public Defender and the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court.
