SYNOPSIS

     Recognizes 150th anniversary of Canada's founding.

A Senate Resolution recognizing the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canada.  

 

Whereas, Canada, the second largest country in the world by total area and the fourth largest by land mass, was founded in 1867, making the year 2017 the 150th Anniversary of its founding; and

Whereas, After 150 years, Canada has not stopped growing, changing and carving out its own identity as a place for nature and food lovers, history buffs, artists, sports fans and anyone who wants to see a diverse country with both spectacular scenic views and bustling cities; and

Whereas, Canada is one of the most educated countries in the world, ranking first worldwide in the number of adults having a tertiary education and an adult literacy rate of 99 percent; and

Whereas, Although English and French are the official languages, a multitude of language are used by Canadians, including American and Quebec Sign Language; and

Whereas, Canada has participated in almost every Olympic Games since its Olympic debut in 1900, and has hosted several high-profile international sporting events, including the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, the 1994 Basketball World Championship, the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, and the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup; and

Whereas, The relationship between the United States and Canada is unique and a model for the world, with the two countries bound by a vibrant history of democratic governance, economic and defense partnerships, and cultural ties; and

Whereas, Canada and the United States jointly share stewardship of the Great Lakes, the world's largest group of freshwater lakes, comprising 21 percent of the world's fresh surface water; and

Whereas, Canada has been a critical ally of the United States in the global war on terror, deploying approximately 2,800 Canadian troops in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan from 2006-2011, the fifth-largest national contingent in the ISAF; and

Whereas, Just like the United States, Canada has a long heritage as a melting pot, is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, and has a reputation for inclusiveness and impeccable politeness; and

Whereas, Canada is one of the only places in the world where a person can camp in the Rocky Mountains, eat maple syrup infused entrees, stay in a hotel made of ice, see moose, caribou, beluga whales, wolves, and polar bears in their natural habitat, or do just about any outdoor activity from scuba diving to heli-skiing; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper for this House to commend and congratulate the people of Canada on their 150th anniversary; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    This House commends and congratulates the people of Canada on the 150th anniversary of their founding.

 

     2.  Copies of their resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the Governor General and Prime Minister of Canada.

 

 

STATEMENT
