A Senate Resolution honoring the life, accomplishments, and legacy of President Nelson Mandela.

Whereas, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a former prisoner of conscience who became President of the Democratic Republic of South Africa under a Government of National Unity in 1994, following that nation's first fully-representative, multiracial national election; and

Whereas, Prior to becoming President, Mr. Mandela endured 27 years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, for opposing apartheid and injustice; and

Whereas, Mr. Mandela fought against apartheid in South Africa and racial segregation and discrimination everywhere; and

Whereas, Throughout his life, Mr. Mandela worked tirelessly to ensure equal rights and political representation to all the people of South Africa and inspired anti-discrimination activists around the world; and

Whereas, Mr. Mandela received national and international honors, including the Nobel Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Star of International Friendship, the Third World Prize, and other international human rights awards; and

Whereas, Mr. Mandela passed away on December 5, 2013; and

Whereas, Mr. Mandela will continue to represent freedom, equality and justice for people everywhere; now, therefore,
