SYNOPSIS
Honors life, accomplishments, and legacy of President Nelson Mandela.

A Senate Resolution honoring the life, accomplishments, and legacy of President Nelson Mandela.
Whereas, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a former prisoner of conscience who became President of the Democratic Republic of South Africa under a Government of National Unity in 1994, following that nation's first fully-representative, multiracial national election; and
Whereas, Prior to becoming President, Mr. Mandela endured 27 years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, for opposing apartheid and injustice; and
Whereas, Mr. Mandela fought against apartheid in South Africa and racial segregation and discrimination everywhere; and
Whereas, Throughout his life, Mr. Mandela worked tirelessly to ensure equal rights and political representation to all the people of South Africa and inspired anti-discrimination activists around the world; and
Whereas, Mr. Mandela received national and international honors, including the Nobel Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Star of International Friendship, the Third World Prize, and other international human rights awards; and
Whereas, Mr. Mandela passed away on December 5, 2013; and
Whereas, Mr. Mandela will continue to represent freedom, equality and justice for people everywhere; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House honors the life, accomplishments, and legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, President of South Africa, and expresses its deepest sympathies on Mr. Mandela's passing to his family and to all the people of South Africa.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the family of Nelson Mandela and to the President and Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.
STATEMENT
This resolution honors the life, accomplishments, and legacy of President Nelson Mandela, a former prisoner of conscience who became President of the Democratic Republic of South Africa and worked tirelessly throughout his life to ensure equal rights and political representation to South Africans and people everywhere.
