SYNOPSIS
Urges federal government to reimburse State, counties, and municipalities for cost of providing security for President Trump.

A Senate Resolution urging the federal government to reimburse the State, counties, and municipalities for the cost of providing security for President Trump.
Whereas, In November 2016, President Trump visited the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey for the weekend, requiring Bedminster law enforcement officers and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office to assist in providing security for the President; and
Whereas, According to reports, during this weekend visit the Bedminster police department logged 103 hours of overtime, costing the department $3,683 in overtime costs; and
Whereas, As reported, to put that number in perspective, as of November 2016, the township had approximately $20,000 left in its overtime budget with most of that money to be used over the holidays when there typically are many shifts that have to be covered because officers are taking vacation days; and
Whereas, It has been reported that employees of the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office also worked a combined 208 hours of overtime during this visit, with a cost of $17,893.38 to county taxpayers; and
Whereas, As reported, if President Trump visits his Bedminster golf club for seven weekends each year, it will cost the town of Bedminster an estimated $1 million over the next four years in overtime costs to help with security, according to township officials; and
Whereas, There have been reports that county and township officials will seek reimbursement from the federal government for the cost of providing security whenever the President stays at or visits his golf course in Bedminster; and
Whereas, If the federal government does not provide reimbursement for these security costs, taxpayers in the municipality and county will be unfairly burdened; and
Whereas, It has been reported that law enforcement agencies in Hawaii and Chicago received grants from the United States Department of Justice to assist with the protection of President Obama; and
Whereas, As the cost of providing security for President Trump is a considerable financial burden, similar grants should be made available to reimburse the State, counties, and municipalities for the cost of providing security for President Trump; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House respectfully urges the federal government to reimburse the State and counties and municipalities in this State for the cost of providing security for President Trump.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the President and Vice President of the United States; the Majority and Minority Leader of the United States Senate; the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives; every member of Congress elected from this State; and the United States Attorney General.
