SYNOPSIS
Urges President Obama to sign recent federal legislation mandating congressional approval of any agreement with Iran.
CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.
A Senate Resolution urging President Obama to sign recent federal legislation mandating congressional approval of any agreement with Iran.
Whereas, On April 2, 2015, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and China reached a preliminary agreement with Iran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions against the country, so that the materials produced by Iran will not be used to develop nuclear weapons; and
Whereas, Many members of Congress from both political parties have expressed skepticism and a deep mistrust of Iran's real reasons for having a nuclear program, believing that it is for developing nuclear weapons that would pose a clear and imminent threat to Israel and other Western-allied nations in the Middle East; and
Whereas, Congress sought to act on its concerns by passing comprehensive legislation that would put any plan by President Obama to lift sanctions on Iran on hold for up to 60 days while Congress reviewed and approved the deal; and
Whereas, President Obama maintained for weeks that congressional interference could jeopardize the sensitive negotiations with Tehran and scuttle the chance for an historic agreement to end the possible proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East; and
Whereas, With pressure on him from both majority and minority members of Congress, President Obama agreed to a compromise that would allow Congress 30 days to review and approve any deal with Iran; and
Whereas, The compromise legislation allows the president to veto any attempt to stop the pact with Iran, but also provides for the override of such a veto by a two-thirds vote of both Houses of Congress; and
Whereas, This House believes that given the importance of the agreement with Iran to world peace and of vigilant congressional oversight on this issue, it is imperative that President Obama sign the compromise legislation as soon as it reaches his desk; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House urges President Obama to sign recent federal legislation mandating congressional approval of any agreement with Iran.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to President Obama, the Majority Leader and Minority Leader of the United States Senate, the Speaker and the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, and every member of Congress elected from this State.
STATEMENT
