A Senate Resolution celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States Postal Service.

Whereas, The United States (US) Postal Service has played a crucial role in American history, evolving from a fledgling colonial mail service into a vital federal agency that supplies every address in this country with critical materials; and

Whereas, Founded on July 26, 1775, the US postal system was established by the Second Continental Congress with Benjamin Franklin appointed as its first Postmaster General; and

Whereas, As the nation grew, so did the US postal system, growing from 75 post offices serving a population of almost 4 million people in 1789 to more than 31,000 post offices serving more than 342 million Americans today; and

Whereas, The US Postal Service transports more than 112 billion pieces of mail annually, rain or shine, using everything from planes to mules to deliver mail to more than 168 million residential and business addresses; and

Whereas, Operating as a fundamental service provided by the government to the American people, the US Postal Service follows congressional directives to prioritize public service over profit, ensuring that every American address has mail delivery six days a week; and

Whereas, The US Postal Service embodies the American value of equality by guaranteeing mail delivery to every address in this country and its territories, no matter how remote, at a uniform price, and by providing reliable service to rural and remote areas, ultimately driving more than 1.9 billion miles over 22.6 million trips in a year; and

Whereas, Post offices have historically served as community hubs, providing essential services and fostering connections among residents; and

Whereas, The American public consistently rates the US Postal Service among the most favorably-rated government agencies; and

Whereas, The US mail is protected by more than 200 federal laws, safeguarding privacy and preventing fraud, while ensuring that the American public and businesses can securely receive critical prescriptions, ballots, social security checks, and packages; and

Whereas, As one of the largest employers in this country, the US Postal Service offers middle class wages, benefits, and union protections to more than 500,000 career employees, including nearly 70,000 veterans; and

Whereas, The US Postal Service has the largest retail network in the nation with more than 33,000 locations serving more than 12 million people each day; and

Whereas, The US Postal Service connects Americans to the rest of the world by accepting an estimated 7.9 million passport applications and processing 44 percent of the world's mail volume annually; and

Whereas, Despite its impact, the US Postal Service faces threats of privatization, which could translate into slashed jobs, closed post offices, and higher rates for postage, which could devastate families, local economies, and entire communities; and

Whereas, As the US Postal Service constantly adapts to meet the needs of the nation, ensuring that communication remains a cornerstone of democracy and community engagement, it is fitting and proper to celebrate the US Postal Service on its 250th anniversary and to affirm the US Postal Service as an essential public institution that belongs to all Americans; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  This House celebrates the United States Postal Service's 250th anniversary and urges Congress to ensure the agency remains a public institution that serves every household in every zip code regardless of geography.

     2.  Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service, the New Jersey District Manager of the United States Postal Service, and every member of Congress elected from this State.

STATEMENT

This Senate Resolution celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States (US) Postal Service.

The US Postal Service has played a crucial role in American history since its founding on July 26, 1775, when Benjamin Franklin was appointed its first Postmaster General.  Since then, the US postal system has grown to include more than 31,000 post offices serving more than 342 million Americans.  Using everything from planes to mules, the US postal Service transports more than 112 billion pieces of mail annually to more than 168 million residential and business addresses.

Operating as a fundamental service provided by the government to the American people, the US Postal Service follows congressional directives to prioritize public service over profit, ensuring that every American address has mail delivery six days a week.  The US Postal Service embodies the American value of equality through guaranteeing mail delivery to every address in this country and its territories, no matter how remote, at a uniform price, through providing reliable service to rural and remote areas.

The American public consistently rates the US Postal Service as one of the most positively viewed government agencies.  The US mail is protected by more than 200 federal laws, safeguarding privacy and preventing fraud, while ensuring that the American public and businesses can securely receive critical prescriptions, ballots, social security checks, and packages.

As one of the largest employers in this country, the US Postal Service offers middle class wages, benefits, and union protections to more than 500,000 career employees, including nearly 70,000 veterans.  The US Postal Service has the largest retail network in the nation with more than 33,000 locations serving more than 12 million people each day.  Additionally, the US Postal Service connects Americans to the rest of the world by accepting an estimated 7.9 million passport applications and processing 44 percent of the world's mail volume annually.

Despite its impact, the US Postal Service faces threats of privatization, which could translate into slashed jobs, closed post offices, and higher rates for postage, which could devastate families, local economies, and entire communities.

The US Postal Service constantly adapts to meet the needs of the nation, ensuring that communication remains a cornerstone of democracy and community engagement.  The New Jersey Senate celebrates the US Postal Service on its 250th anniversary and affirms it as an essential public institution that belongs to all Americans.
