SYNOPSIS

Designates March 2010 as Census Awareness Month; requires State offices to display census materials in common areas.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Joint Resolution designating March 2010 as Census Awareness Month in the State of New Jersey and requiring State offices to display census materials in common areas.

Whereas, The decennial federal census is conducted to count every resident of the United States and is required by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution; and

Whereas, The census data collected is used to apportion seats in Congress among the states and to distribute $400 billion nationally to tribal, State and local governments each year; and

Whereas, Information from the census helps State and local officials to make decisions about what vital community projects and services to provide, including funding for hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior citizen centers, public works projects and emergency services; and

Whereas, The 2010 Census form will be the shortest in the nation's history, consisting of 10 questions and taking about 10 minutes to complete; and

Whereas, Federal law requires that all answers given on the form be held in strict confidence and prohibits the Census Bureau from sharing such information with any federal, State or local department or agency; and

Whereas, Census forms will start to be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico beginning in March of this year and respondents will be required to mail back the forms as soon as possible; and

Whereas, Given the importance to this State of the results of the census and the participation of every resident thereof, it is fitting and proper that the Governor and Legislature join in designating March 2010 as Census Awareness Month in the State of New Jersey and requiring State offices to display census materials in common areas of such offices; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    March of 2010 is designated as Census Awareness Month in the State of New Jersey.

     2.    State offices shall display census materials in common areas of such offices to raise public awareness about the occurrence and importance of the census for residents of New Jersey.

     3.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This joint resolution would designate March 2010 as Census Awareness Month in the State of New Jersey.  It also requires State offices to display census materials in common areas to raise public awareness about the occurrence and importance of the census for residents of New Jersey.
