This concurrent resolution recognizes and honors the 50th anniversary of the "National Historic Preservation Act of 1966," (NHPA) and the invaluable contribution it has made to the United States and the State of New Jersey over the last 50 years.

The NHPA established a legal framework for the protection of historic buildings, landscapes, and archaeological discoveries, and created the National Register of Historic Places and the Federal Preservation Tax Incentive Program.  As a result, millions of jobs have been created, tens of thousands of historic structures have been saved, and billions of dollars in investments have been received.  Furthermore, in the past 25 years alone, 1,600 communities were able to revitalize their historic districts and 89,000 historic buildings were renovated through programs and funding made available by the NHPA.

To commemorate the profound impact of the NHPA over the past 50 years, public and private partners, including New Jersey's Historic Preservation Office, have come together to form "Preservation50."  The organization seeks to enhance historic preservation efforts through coalition building, implementing lessons learned from the first 50 years of the NHPA, educating policymakers and members of the public on the importance of historic preservation, and preparing the next generation of leaders of the preservation movement.
