SYNOPSIS

     Declares March 14 - March 21, 2011 "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week."

A Concurrent Resolution declaring the week of March 14 through March 21, 2011 as "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week" in New Jersey.

 

Whereas, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often debilitating, disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body, restricting a person's ability to move; and

Whereas, Symptoms of the disease include, but are not limited to, feelings of numbness or tingling throughout the body, blindness, changes in cognitive function, pain, and paralysis; the progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another, but advances in research and treatment are moving scientists closer to a cure, and giving new hope to persons afflicted with the disease; and

Whereas, Multiple sclerosis generally strikes young adults between the ages of 20 and 50; the New Jersey Metro and Greater Delaware Valley Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society report that in the State of New Jersey, more than 13,000 persons are suffering with MS, and nationwide, more than 400,000 Americans are affected by the disease; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Metro and Greater Delaware Valley Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society have been committed throughout the years to mobilizing the voices of persons Statewide who advocate for and raise awareness of MS; and

Whereas, These local chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society are also dedicated to administering educational programs and providing services that enhance the lives of persons with MS and their families, planning activities that raise public awareness, and recognizing those who have devoted their time and talent to promoting research into the cause of, and discovering new treatment for, the disease; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey (the General Assembly concurring):

 

     1.    This House declares the week of March 14 through March 21, 2011 as "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week" in New Jersey in order to promote public awareness about MS, its symptoms, and the need for effective treatments for the disease, and to recognize the work of the New Jersey Metro and Greater Delaware Valley Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in advocating for and raising awareness of MS.

 

     2.    The Governor is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week" with appropriate activities and programs.

     3.    A duly authenticated copy of this concurrent resolution signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary of the Senate and signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk of the General Assembly, shall be transmitted to the New Jersey Metro and Greater Delaware Valley Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This concurrent resolution declares the week of March 14 through March 21, 2011 as "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week" in New Jersey in order to promote public awareness about MS, its symptoms, and the need for effective treatments for the disease, and to recognize the work of the New Jersey Metro and Greater Delaware Valley Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in advocating for and raising awareness of MS.
