SYNOPSIS

Commemorates 20th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and reaffirms commitment to full compliance with ADA.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Concurrent Resolution commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and reaffirming New Jersey's commitment to full compliance with the ADA.

Whereas, On July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities; and

Whereas, The ADA established a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities; and

Whereas, The ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions, and increasing full participation in community life; and

Whereas, At least one million New Jersey residents, composing approximately 13% of the State's population, live their daily lives with some form of physical or mental disability; and

Whereas, The full promise of the ADA will only be reached through a steadfast commitment to the ADA's full implementation and an unwavering allegiance to its principles; and

Whereas, 2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of the ADA's landmark protection of civil rights; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper for the State of New Jersey to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the ADA and to renew its commitment to full ADA compliance; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey (the General Assembly concurring):

     1.    The Legislature of the State of New Jersey hereby commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and reaffirms its commitment to full compliance with the ADA and its underlying principles of equality and inclusion.

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary thereof, and signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to every presiding officer of the Congress of the United States and every member thereof elected from this State.

STATEMENT

This concurrent resolution commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and recognizes the significant impact the ADA has had in protecting civil rights and expanding opportunities for Americans with disabilities.  Furthermore, this resolution reaffirms this State's commitment to full compliance with the ADA and its underlying principles of equality and inclusion.
