STATEMENT

This bill requires the Division of Consumer Affairs in the Department of Law and Public Safety to establish a directory of telemarketers registered with the division in accordance with New Jersey's laws regulating telemarketers, P.L.2003, c.76 (C.56:8-119 et seq).

The directory will contain the name and address of each registered telemarketer and any other information which the director of the division deems appropriate.  The information in the directory will be updated monthly.

The bill requires the division to make the directory readily accessible to the public by means of a toll-free telephone number and by posting the directory on the division's Internet Web site.

The division currently has a directory of registered charities on its Web site and maintains a "Charities Hotline."  The division is required by section 14 of P.L.2004, c.16 (C.56:8-149) to provide a toll-free telephone number for consumers making inquiries regarding contractors.  This bill would require the division to take similar steps to provide information to consumers who are seeking information regarding telemarketers.
