SYNOPSIS

     Requires Department of Human Services to establish and maintain hotline for persons with disability for use during emergency or disaster.

An Act concerning a 1[Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services]1 hotline for people with disabilities and supplementing Title 1[34] 301 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  Within 60 days of the effective date of P.L.    , c. (C.  ) (pending before the Legislature as this bill), 1[the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services in]1 the Department of 1[Labor and Workforce Development] Human Services1 , in 1[conjunction] consultation1 with State Centers for Independent Living, shall establish and maintain a toll-free telephone hotline available, at a minimum, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. which shall provide 1resources and1 information 1[and referral services]1 to 1[people] persons1 with 1[disabilities] a disability during emergencies and disasters1 .

     b.    1As an alternative to the department establishing a hotline pursuant to subsection a. of this section, the department may contract out services to operate the hotline.

     c.1   As used in this act:

     "Centers for Independent Living" are community-based, consumer-driven organizations run by the Statewide Independent Living Council that provide information and referral, peer counseling, skills training, advocacy and a variety of services based on individual needs.

     1["Person] "Persons1 with a disability" means any 1[individual] individuals1 who 1[is] are1 unable to engage in any substantial gainful employment by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which is of a long-continued or indefinite duration or which can be expected to result in death.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.
