SYNOPSIS

     Permits eligible students who are members of United States Armed Forces to wear military uniform at high school graduation.

An Act concerning high school graduation ceremonies and supplementing chapter 7C of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    A school district shall allow a student to wear a dress uniform issued to the student by a branch of the United States Armed Forces while participating in the student's high school graduation ceremony, if the following requirements are met:

     a.     the student has fulfilled all of the State and local requirements for receiving a high school diploma, and is otherwise eligible to participate in the high school graduation ceremony; and

     b.    the student has completed basic training for, and is an active member of, a branch of the United States Armed Forces.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect on the first day of the third month next following the date of enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires school districts to allow eligible students to wear a dress uniform issued by the United States Armed Forces while participating in their high school graduation ceremony.  Under the bill, a student will be permitted to wear a dress uniform at graduation if: (1) the student has fulfilled all State and local requirements for receiving a high school diploma and is otherwise eligible to participate in the high school graduation ceremony; and (2) the student has completed basic training for, and is an active member of, a branch of the United States Armed Forces.
