SYNOPSIS
Requires public schools to include instruction on the events relating to September 11, 2001 and the death of Osama bin Laden, as part of core curriculum content standards.

An Act concerning public school curriculum instruction on the events relating to September 11, 2001 and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Each board of education which operates an educational program for public school students in grades 5 through 12 shall provide instruction on the events related to September 11, 2001, including the death of Osama bin Laden, as part of the Core Curriculum Content Standards in Social Studies. The Social Studies curriculum framework developed by the Department of Education shall include age-appropriate sample learning activities and resources designed to teach students the significance of the acts of September 11, 2001, recall Americans' sense of national unity, courage, and sacrifice, and preserve the memory of this tragedy.
2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall first apply to the 2016-2017 school year.
STATEMENT
This bill requires each board of education to include instruction on the events relating to September 11, 2001, including the death of Osama bin Laden, in an appropriate manner for public school students in grades 5 through 12, as part of the Core Curriculum Content Standards in Social Studies. The Social Studies curriculum framework developed by the Department of Education shall include age-appropriate sample learning activities and resources designed to understand the significance of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, recall Americans' sense of national unity, courage, and sacrifice, and preserve the memory of this tragedy.
