STATEMENT
This bill clarifies the definition of "automatic fire suppression system" in section 1 of P.L.1983, c.309 (C.54:4-3.130) to include automatic sprinkler systems, and defines "automatic sprinkler system" as an integrated system of underground or overhead piping designed in accordance with fire protection engineering standards, consisting of a suitable water supply and an above-ground system of specially sized or hydraulically designed piping installed in a structure or area, generally overhead, to which automatic sprinklers are connected in a systematic pattern and usually activated as a result of a predetermined temperature rise, rate of rise of temperature, or increase in the level of combustion products. This definition would encompass computer controlled and electro-mechanical systems as well as purely mechanical systems. The purpose of this bill is to clarify that an automatic fire suppression system, including an automatic sprinkler system, in a residential, commercial, or industrial building and certified by the enforcing agency as an automatic fire suppression system shall be exempt from taxation under chapter 4 of Title 54 of the Revised Statutes.
