SYNOPSIS

Urges New Jersey Department of State to post on its website notice of days, weeks, and months designated by law in this State as special commemorations.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the New Jersey Department of State to post on its website notice of the days, weeks, and months designated by law in this State as special commemorations.

Whereas,  The Legislature and the Governor of this State have permanently designated by law specific days, weeks, and months of every year for special commemoration by New Jersey residents; and

Whereas,  These special commemorations range from Black History Month, to Cancer Awareness Week, and Vietnam Veterans' Remembrance Day, giving this State's residents the opportunity to pause on the designated day, week, or month to reflect on the subject of special commemoration and engage in appropriate activities at schools, workplaces, and communities; and

Whereas,  Unfortunately, the State does not currently provide to the public information in a central place on the designated commemorative dates, and too often members of the public are not aware of the specific days, weeks, or months that have been so designated for these important events and causes; and

Whereas,  As part of implementing the State's goal of regularly commemorating in New Jersey these designated events and causes, a list of the specific days, weeks, or months in which special commemorations are observed in this State should be provided to New Jersey residents on an official State website; and

Whereas,  Because the mission of the Office of the New Jersey Secretary of State includes advancing the cultural and historical heritage of this State and encouraging the civic engagement of this State's residents, it is fitting and proper for the Department of State to make available and maintain on its official website a list of the days, weeks, or months designated by law in New Jersey for special commemorations; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House urges the New Jersey Department of State to make available and maintain on its official website a list of the specific days, weeks, or months designated by law in New Jersey for special commemorations each year, consistent with its mission to advance the cultural and historical heritage of this State and encourage the civic engagement of this State's residents.

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested to by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, New Jersey's Secretary of State.

STATEMENT

This resolution urges the New Jersey Department of State to post on its website a notice of the days, weeks, and months designated by law as special commemorations to be observed each year in this State.  The Legislature and the Governor have permanently designated by law specific days, weeks, and months of every year for special commemoration by New Jersey residents.  These special commemorations range from Black History Month, to Cancer Awareness Week, and Vietnam Veterans' Remembrance Day, giving this State's residents the opportunity to pause on the designated day, week, or month to reflect on the subject of special commemoration and engage in appropriate activities at schools, workplaces, and communities.  However, the State does not currently provide to the public in a central place a comprehensive list of the designated commemorative dates, and too often members of the public are not aware of the specific days, weeks, or months that have been designated to observe these important events and causes.  This resolution therefore urges the New Jersey Department of State to make available and maintain on its official website a list of the specific days, weeks, or months designated by law in New Jersey for special commemorations each year, consistent with its mission to advance the cultural and historical heritage of this State and encourage the civic engagement of this State's residents.
