An Assembly Resolution commending the New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee.

Whereas, The Civil War was a defining event in American history shaping the social, political, and economic beliefs of a nation destined to provide "liberty and justice for all"; and

Whereas, The hundreds of thousands of lives lost in the Civil War were not lost in vain for the civil struggle between the North and the South resulted in: the abolishment of slavery and indentured servitude; the promise of immunity, due process, and equal protection; and the privilege of voting rights regardless of race or color; and

Whereas, The 150th anniversary of the Civil War will be observed around the nation in the years 2011 to 2015; and

Whereas, New Jerseyans began to address their opposition to slavery as early as the late eighteenth century and soon thereafter passed New Jersey's first abolition act in 1804 and its second, stronger abolition act in 1846; and

Whereas, New Jersey operated many "Underground Railroad" stations from Cape May to Jersey City with well known conductors including Harriet Tubman and William Still; and

Whereas, New Jersey sent the first full militia brigade to defend Washington after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter; and

Whereas, 73,000 men from New Jersey served in the Union Army; and

Whereas, The women from New Jersey served on and off the battlefields tending to the injured and sick soldiers, sewing uniforms, writing supportive poetry, and supporting military academics; and

Whereas, New Jersey expanded its economy to include the production of industrial goods such as uniforms, cutlery, swords, bayonets, muskets, and railroad engines to help win the war through technological advantage; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee is an all volunteer citizen group within the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association with expert knowledge in the history of the Civil War and the role New Jersey played in it; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee is dedicated to fostering an understanding and appreciation of the event by the citizens of New Jersey and all others for the importance of New Jersey's role in the Civil War by creating, producing, and publicizing commemorative activities and educational programs around the State of New Jersey during New Jersey's 2011 to 2015 celebration of the anniversary of the Civil War; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
