SYNOPSIS
Declares April 1, 2010 as Census Day in New Jersey.

An Assembly Resolution declaring April 1, 2010 as Census Day in the State of New Jersey.
Whereas, Article I, Section 2, paragraph 3 of the United States Constitution requires the federal government to undertake a census at the beginning of each decade to count every resident of the United States; and
Whereas, The data collected is used to apportion the 435 seats in federal House of Representatives among the states; and
Whereas, More than $400 billion is distributed each year to State and local governments across the United States based on the information collected by the census; and
Whereas, Such funding helps State and local officials in New Jersey and elsewhere to undertake essential community projects and services involving, for example, schools, job training centers, hospitals, senior citizen centers, emergency services and public works projects; and
Whereas, The 2010 census form will consist of 10 questions and take about 10 minutes to complete, making it the shortest such form in history; and
Whereas, All answers given on the form must be held in strict confidence, pursuant to federal law, and cannot be shared with any federal, State or local department or agency; and
Whereas, April 1, 2010 has been designated as National Census Day by the federal government to raise public awareness about the census and as a point of reference for residents to send their completed forms back in the mail; and
Whereas, Given the impact of the census on the representation of this State in Congress and to ensure the greatest allowable allocation of federal funds to New Jersey, it is of vital importance to all residents that every person residing in this State participate in the census and be counted; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper that this House declare April 1 as Census Day in the State of New Jersey to raise public awareness about the occurrence and importance of the census for residents of this State; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. April 1, 2010 is declared Census Day in the State of New Jersey.
2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the Governor, the head of every principal department in the Executive Branch of State government and the Clerk of every county in this State.

This Assembly resolution declares April 1, 2010 as Census Day in the State of New Jersey.
