CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

An Assembly Resolution designating February 1[21] 201 through February 1[27, 2010] 26, 20111, as "Eating Disorders Awareness Week."

Whereas, More than five million Americans, most of them women, are affected by eating disorders such as binge eating, anorexia, or bulimia nervosa; and

Whereas, An eating disorder refers to a set of eating habits, weight management practices, and attitudes about weight and body shape which result in a loss of self-control and other forms of behavioral inefficiency, alienation from self and others, and feelings of obsession, anxiety, guilt and other forms of misery, as well as damage to an individual's reproductive and circulatory system; and

Whereas, These disorders arise from long-standing psychological, interpersonal, and social conditions, including feelings of inadequacy, depression, anxiety, loneliness, troubled family, and personal relationships; and the American culture's idealization of thinness and the "perfect body" may also contribute to the development of an eating disorder; and

Whereas, The National Eating Disorders Screening Program (NEDSP) represents a large-scale screening program for eating disorders; the program includes an educational presentation on eating disorders and other related topics, a screening test, and the opportunity to meet one-on-one with health professionals; it also provides individuals with information about how to help friends or family members who may be suffering from eating disorders; and

Whereas, The goal of the NEDSP is to raise public and professional awareness of the signs and symptoms of eating disorders and the availability of specialized treatment options, highlight the fact that early detection and prompt treatment are likely to speed the recovery process, encourage people suffering from eating disorders to seek treatment, and encourage public understanding of these disorders in order to promote compassionate and supportive attitudes towards the individuals who suffer with this problem; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The week of February 1[21] 201 through February 1[27, 2010] 26, 20111 is designated "Eating Disorders Awareness Week" in the State of New Jersey in order to raise public awareness of the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, highlight the fact that early detection and prompt treatment are likely to speed the recovery process, and encourage public understanding of these disorders in order to promote compassionate and supportive attitudes towards the individuals who suffer with this problem.

     2.    The Governor is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe the week with appropriate activities and programs.
