Encourages private employers to provide veteran employees with paid holiday on Veterans' Day.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel

An Assembly Resolution encouraging private employers to provide veteran employees with a paid holiday on Veterans' Day.

Whereas,  Under current State law, the term "veteran" commonly refers to an individual who has served in any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States during a specific period and, often, for a specific length of time; and

Whereas,  It is estimated that there are over 25 million veterans living in the United States and 630,000 living in New Jersey; and

Whereas,  Veterans have served our country in times of war and peace, sharing a common belief in a cause higher than self and a shared sense of duty; and

Whereas,  Veterans' Day is a legal holiday, celebrated annually on November 11, to honor those men and women who have served in our armed forces; and

Whereas,  Numerous ceremonies, parades and memorial services are held on Veterans' Day to honor the service people who have assumed all the risks associated with maintaining our freedom and liberties and preserving the ideals of democracy; and

Whereas,  Veterans are valuable, productive members of the State workforce; and

Whereas,  The State of New Jersey recognizes the importance of Veterans' Day and provides State employees with a paid holiday on Veterans' Day; and

Whereas,  Private employers throughout the State should recognize the services supplied by our military personnel by providing all veteran employees with a paid holiday on Veterans' Day in recognition of their commitment to the United States Armed Forces; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  The General Assembly of the State of New Jersey urges all private employers around the State to provide employees who are veterans with a paid holiday on Veterans' Day in recognition of their service to the State of New Jersey and the United States of America.

     2.  A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the New Jersey Department of Labor, the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA), the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce, and the New Jersey chapter of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB).

STATEMENT

This resolution encourages private employers to provide a paid holiday to all employees who are veterans on Veterans' Day.  The paid holiday would allow veterans to attend ceremonies, parades, memorial services or other events which are held on Veterans' Day to honor those service men and women who have assumed all the risks associated with maintaining freedom and liberties and preserving the ideals of democracy.  The holiday would allow employers to recognize the services provided by our military personnel by providing all veteran employees with a paid holiday on Veterans'  Day in recognition of their commitment to the United States Armed Forces.
