SYNOPSIS

Urges citizens of New Jersey to "Buy American" products in order to stimulate economic recovery and create jobs.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel

An Assembly Resolution urging the citizens of New Jersey to "Buy American" products in order to stimulate economic recovery and create jobs.

Whereas, The United States has a long and proud tradition of manufacturing that is honored each year by Labor Day celebrations; and

Whereas, Manufacturing jobs are important to New Jersey, helping to sustain both the State's economy and individual families, allowing generations of New Jerseyans to prosper; and

Whereas, New Jersey's workers manufacture great products, which are subject to safety and environmental standards, in exchange for a fair wage; and

Whereas, Goods manufactured outside the United States have a low price because they are produced in countries without a minimum wage, worker safety standards, or environmental pollution controls; and

Whereas, Manufacturing has steadily declined in New Jersey and the United States, due in part to less costly imported products; and

Whereas, This decline has caused many workers formerly employed in manufacturing to lose their jobs, bringing attendant hardships for their families and the communities in which they live and work; and

Whereas, The economic downturn has had a disproportionate impact on the manufacturing sector, creating an increasingly difficult environment for everyday Americans who are struggling to maintain or find jobs; and

Whereas, New Jerseyans can immediately support struggling American families, help stabilize the economy, and encourage conscientious manufacturing by purchasing goods that are made in America; and

Whereas, In honor of Labor Day, it is altogether fitting and proper for this House to urge the citizens of New Jersey to "Buy American"; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

This House urges the citizens of New Jersey to "Buy American" products in order to stimulate economic growth and create American jobs.

STATEMENT

This resolution urges the citizens of New Jersey to "Buy American" products in order to stimulate economic growth and create American jobs. This will allow more jobs to stay in the United States and provide the citizens of New Jersey with quality goods that have been produced in a conscientious manner.

Manufacturing has steadily declined in New Jersey and the United States, leading to fewer family and community sustaining jobs. The economic downturn has exacerbated the decline, causing even more manufacturing jobs to be lost to factories outside of the United States. Many of these factories operate without a minimum wage, worker safety standards, or environmental pollution controls. The citizens of New Jersey can immediately support struggling American families, help to stabilize the economy, and encourage conscientious manufacturing by buying domestically produced products.

This resolution is also intended to thank American workers for their hard work, in the spirit of the recent Labor Day holiday.
