CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution designating the month of June 2015 as "Internet Safety Month" in New Jersey.

Whereas, The Internet has become an essential tool in our society, allowing citizens of New Jersey to better connect with family and friends, work more efficiently, become better educated, and better manage everyday life; and

Whereas, Although the Internet provides many benefits, there are also potential risks to our confidential information, personal privacy, and personal safety; and

Whereas, Most teenagers have social network profiles, yet few parents are aware of their children's social networking habits, and many parents allow their children to use the Internet with no supervision or restrictions; and

Whereas, Twenty percent of teenaged Internet users have been the target of an unwanted sexual solicitation online, which often occurs when children are online with their friends; and

Whereas, Many online game applications share personal information collected through the application; and

Whereas, In 2013 there were nearly 450,000 phishing attacks, which are online scams to fraudulently gather a bank account holder's financial information, resulting in estimated losses of more than $5.9 billion; and

Whereas, Hackers have gained access to and exposed the personal information of millions of Americans, as evidenced in several credit card information security breaches at major retailers in this country; and

Whereas, Reports indicate that Americans are extremely concerned their personal or financial information is being stolen and feel a responsibility to be safer and more secure online; and

Whereas, Increasing Internet awareness, education, and training creates a digital community that is safer and more resistant to online attacks, which have an increasingly detrimental impact on our lives as we increasingly rely on the Internet; and

Whereas, This House finds that it is in the best interest of the citizens of this State that people of all ages should know how to protect their private online accounts and personal information and declares June 2015 as "Internet Safety Month" in this State to educate and inform the residents of New Jersey about the risks of the Internet and the importance of being safe and responsible online; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The month of June 2015 is designated as "Internet Safety Month" in the State of New Jersey to educate the citizens of the State on the risks of the Internet and the importance of being safe and responsible online.
