SYNOPSIS
Notes one year anniversary of fatal sinking of South Korean ferry MV Sewol and expresses sincere condolences to families of those killed.

An Assembly Resolution noting the one year anniversary of the fatal sinking of South Korean ferry MV Sewol and expressing sincere condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster.
Whereas, April 16, 2015 marked the one year anniversary of the sinking of the South Korean ferry MV Sewol when over 300 people, mostly young adults from the same high school, died after the vessel capsized during a route trip from the city of Inchon, near Seoul, to the holiday island of Jeju; and
Whereas, Of the 476 passengers and crew on board, only 172 were rescued, and while the bodies of 295 passengers were recovered nine people were unaccounted for months after the disaster; and
Whereas, Seven months after the disaster, the South Korean government announced that it was unable to continue its search for the remains of the missing passengers because of the deteriorating condition of the ship and worsening sea conditions with the onset of winter; and
Whereas, The South Korean government has a responsibility to not forget the pain and hardship of the grieving families who will never again see their lost family members, and to maintain a dialogue with the surviving families to help them heal and come to terms with the tragic consequences of this disaster; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper for this House to note the one year anniversary of the fatal sinking of South Korean ferry MV Sewol and express condolences to the families of the passengers killed in the disaster; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House notes the one year anniversary of the fatal sinking of South Korean ferry MV Sewol and expresses sincere condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to South Korea's ambassador to the United States.
