SYNOPSIS

     Acknowledges and congratulates New Jersey resident Ahmed Zayat for owning American Pharoah, winner of 2015 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes horse races and potential Triple Crown winner.

An Assembly Resolution acknowledging and congratulating New Jersey resident Ahmed Zayat for owning American Pharoah, the winner of the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2015  1, and of the 140th running of the Preakness Stakes on May 16, 20151.

 

Whereas, Ahmed Zayat, of Teaneck, Bergen County, is the owner of American Pharoah, the horse that won the 141st Kentucky Derby by a length with jockey Victor Espinoza in the saddle; and

Whereas, American Pharoah won with a time of 2:03:02 before 170,513 spectators at Churchill Downs, the largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history; and

Whereas, Ahmet Zayat is a New Jersey entrepreneur who was born in Cairo, Egypt, and who formed Kentucky-based Zayat Stables in 2005; and

Whereas, Zayat Stables was the home of Pioneer of the Nile, the horse which finished second in the 2009 Kentucky Derby and was the sire of American Pharoah; and

Whereas, Before entering the Derby, American Pharoah had won more than $1.4 million in earnings thanks to four straight victories; and

Whereas, Although American Pharoah was the favorite heading into the Derby, it had to fight Firing Line and Dortmund to clinch the victory and win $1.24 million in prize money; and

Whereas, After the race, Zayat expressed the belief that American Pharoah was a very special horse, with an exceptional demeanor and aura, which always had the potential to win the Derby; and

1Whereas, Following his victory at the Derby, American Pharoah went on to win the 140th Preakness Stakes on May 16, 2015, and is thereby in a position to become a Triple Crown winner if successful at the upcoming Belmont Stakes race; and1

Whereas, It is fitting and proper for this House to acknowledge and congratulate New Jersey resident Ahmed Zayat for owning American Pharoah, the winner of the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2015  1, of the 140th running of the Preakness Stakes on May 16, 2015, and a potential Triple Crown winner1; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    This House acknowledges and congratulates New Jersey resident Ahmed Zayat for owning American Pharoah, the winner of the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2015  1, of the 140th running of the Preakness Stakes on May 16, 2015, and a potential Triple Crown winner1.

 

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to Mr. Ahmet Zayat.
