An Assembly Resolution recognizing the State observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

Whereas, Every 69 seconds, somewhere in the world, a woman dies of breast cancer; every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer; and every 13 minutes, a woman loses her battle with the disease; and

Whereas, In 2014, in the United States, 232,570 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,000 will die; and

Whereas, In 2014, in New Jersey, there will be 7,290 new diagnoses of, and 1,400 deaths from, breast cancer; and

Whereas, Breast cancer mortality has decreased by two percent each year for the past decade due to increased awareness, annual mammograms, earlier detection, and more effective treatments.  Currently, there are 3,131,400 breast cancer survivors in the United States alone - more survivors than for any other type of cancer; and

Whereas, Each year, the month of October is observed nationwide as "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month"; and

Whereas, The month of October in each year is designated as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of New Jersey pursuant to P.L.2005, J.R.7 (C.36:2-86); and

Whereas, Various organizations have provided, and are providing, critical services to the people of this State relating to breast cancer, including education and public awareness, preventive health, assistance with care, counseling, social services, and advocacy; and

Whereas, These organizations also provide, and continue to provide, funding for innovative scientific research that is an essential component of the war against cancer.  Their ongoing efforts on behalf of New Jerseyans are most laudatory and sincerely appreciated by this House and all the citizens of New Jersey; and

Whereas, The efforts of these organizations have made a major contribution to spreading breast cancer awareness to both women and men in all communities in this State.  Their outreach, education, and screening programs have empowered women with the life-saving message of early detection and the importance of having annual mammograms; now, therefore,
