SYNOPSIS

     Commends Rutgers Coach C. Vivian Stringer for 900 wins in women's college basketball.

An Assembly Resolution commending Rutgers Coach C. Vivian Stringer for her 900 wins as a head coach in women's college basketball.

 

Whereas, Rutgers women's basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer has built an illustrious career highlighted by countless accomplishments, including her recent achievement of 900 wins as a head coach in women's college basketball; and

Whereas, Over the past 31 years, Coach Stringer has led three different basketball programs to 25 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament appearances and is the only head coach to lead three different programs to the Final Four; and

Whereas, In her 18 seasons as head coach at Rutgers University, Coach Stringer has led Rutgers to ten straight NCAA tournament appearances and 14 tournament appearances overall, including the team's 2000 and 2007 appearances in the Final Four; and

Whereas, On February 26, 2013, Rutgers University defeated the University of South Florida making Coach Stringer the seventh coach in college basketball history to achieve 900 wins and only the fourth coach in women's college basketball to reach this milestone; and 

Whereas, In her six appearances on the coaching staff of the U.S. Women's Olympic Basketball team, including serving as an assistant coach for the 2004 gold-medal winning team, Coach Stringer has solidified herself as a national and international force in the game of women's basketball; and 

Whereas, Coach Stringer was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and was named one of the "101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports" by Sports Illustrated Magazine in 2003; and

Whereas, As one of the most recognizable names in basketball, Coach Stringer was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on September 11, 2009; and

Whereas, Coach C. Vivian Stringer has shaped and continues to influence the lives of hundreds of women on and off the court; and

Whereas, Given this record of accomplishment and commitment to excellence, this House finds it fitting and proper to honor C. Vivian Stringer for her outstanding career in basketball and her dedication to the betterment of the sport; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    This House commends Coach C. Vivian Stringer for achieving 900 wins as a head coach in women's college basketball.

 

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested to by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the President of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and Coach C. Vivian Stringer.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This resolution commends Coach C. Vivian Stringer for achieving 900 career wins in coaching women's college basketball.

     In her 31 years of coaching, Coach Stringer has led three different basketball programs to 25 NCAA tournament appearances. She is the only head coach to take three different basketball programs to the Final Four. In 18 seasons as head coach at Rutgers University, Coach Stringer has led Rutgers to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, including two Final Four appearances. On February 26, 2013, Coach Stringer became the seventh college basketball coach in history to achieve 900 wins.

     Coach Stringer's career milestones go beyond college basketball. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. She served as an assistant coach for the 2004 gold-medal winning U.S. Women's Olympic Basketball team and was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. As one of the most recognizable names in basketball, C. Vivian Stringer continues to redefine the game of basketball and shape the lives of hundreds of women on and off the court.
