SYNOPSIS
Designates week of April 7, 2020 as "Local Government Week."

An Assembly Resolution designating the week of April 7, 2020 as "Local Government Week" in New Jersey.
Whereas, Local governments have a direct and frequent impact on the lives of New Jersey residents, however citizens are often encouraged to focus their civic efforts on State and federal participation; and
Whereas, In New Jersey, residents can have an intimate involvement with local government processes and have a significant impact on local government laws and regulations at various levels of local government; and
Whereas, New Jersey local government encompasses 21 counties, 565 municipalities, and 691 school districts; and
Whereas, In New Jersey, over nine million residents rely on the numerous services provided by local governments to satisfy the health, welfare, and public safety needs of their many diverse communities; and
Whereas, Despite the significant impact of local government on the lives of New Jersey residents, the importance of efficient, productive, and responsive local government is often understated; and
Whereas, In order to demonstrate the importance of local government and the State's continued commitment to fostering efficient, productive, and responsive local government services in New Jersey, residents are encouraged to participate in "Local Government Week"; and
Whereas, A week devoted to local government is an opportunity for counties, municipalities, and school districts to promote civic engagement and community cooperation within local governments in New Jersey; and
Whereas, "Local Government Week" focuses on the need for efficient, productive, and responsive local government in New Jersey by encouraging local governments throughout the State to participate in relevant events and promotions; and
Whereas, Counties, municipalities, and school districts can promote "Local Government Week" by adopting resolutions to explain the importance of local government, holding town hall meetings to encourage civic participation, and using social media to promote involvement with local government events such as community service days; and
Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper to designate the week of April 7, 2020 as "Local Government Week" in New Jersey; now, therefore,
Be It
Resolved by the General Assembly of the State
of New Jersey:
1. The week of April 7, 2020 shall be designated as "Local Government Week" in order to demonstrate the importance of local government and to promote active involvement in local government by residents of this State.
2. The Governor is respectfully requested to issue a proclamation recognizing the week of April 7, 2020 as "Local Government Week" and to urge public officials and the citizens of New Jersey to observe the week with appropriate activities and programs.
3. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Governor, the New Jersey State League of Municipalities, the New Jersey Association of Counties, and the New Jersey School Boards Association.
STATEMENT
This resolution designates the week of April 7, 2020 as "Local Government Week," as requested by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities pursuant to a Conference Resolution adopted at the League's 103rd Annual Conference. Local governments have a direct and frequent impact on the lives of New Jersey residents. However, citizens are often encouraged to focus their civic efforts on State and federal participation. In New Jersey, residents can have an intimate involvement with local government processes and have a significant impact on local government laws and regulations. Over nine million residents rely on the numerous services provided by local governments to satisfy the health, welfare, and public safety needs of their many diverse communities.
In order to demonstrate the State's commitment to fostering efficient, productive, and responsive local government in New Jersey, citizens are encouraged to participate in "Local Government Week." A week devoted to local government focuses on the need for efficient, productive, and responsive local government in New Jersey by encouraging local governments throughout the State to participate in relevant events and promotions. Counties, municipalities, and school districts can promote "Local Government Week" by adopting resolutions to explain the importance of local government, holding town hall meetings to encourage civic participation, and using social media to promote involvement with local government events such as community service days.
