SYNOPSIS

Urges Congress to take bi-partisan action before sequestration negatively impacts national security.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the United States Congress to take bi-partisan action before sequestration negatively impacts national security.

Whereas, The Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011 imposed spending caps on programs that will reduce their funding by more than $1 trillion over the ten years, which would be divided equally between defense and domestic discretionary spending, a process also referred to as sequestration; and

Whereas, The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is an agency of the federal government charged with protecting the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce; and

WHEREAS, The TSA is responsible for screening airline passengers and personnel for weapons, explosives, and other contraband that pose a threat to airport security and the safety of the general public; and

Whereas, A ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee has projected that sequestration would result in the loss of 9,000 TSA airport screeners and 1,600 customs officers at United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP); and

Whereas, Automatic spending cuts without serious consideration given to certain important issues, including national security and travel, will have negative consequences for our nation; and

Whereas, Before negative consequences are triggered by the threat of sequestration, there needs to be a balanced, bi-partisan approach to solving our federal government's budgetary issues; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1. This House respectfully memorializes the United States Congress to take a bi-partisan approach to solving our federal government's budgetary issues before the Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011 imposes spending cuts that negatively impact national security, including the Transportation Security Administration which protects the nation's transportation systems.

     2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested to by the Clerk thereof shall be transmitted to each member of the United States Congress.
