SYNOPSIS
Urges federal government and telecommunications service providers to collaborate in development of "5th Generation" wireless network.

An Assembly Resolution urging the federal government and certain telecommunications service providers to develop a "5th Generation" wireless network.
Whereas, The "5th Generation" (5G) wireless network is the evolution of the existing 4th Generation Long-Term Evolution (4G LTE) wireless network that delivers wireless data to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets; and
Whereas, The speeds of the 5G wireless network may be up to 10 times faster than the speeds of the existing 4G LTE wireless network; and
Whereas, Some have stated that 5G wireless network speeds and bandwidth will be used to connect industries, intelligent transportation, smart grids, and e-health; and
Whereas, The growth of data traffic is expected to grow 55 percent each year over the next five years; and
Whereas, As America's wireless usage grows so does the risk from cyberattacks--it has been estimated that in 2016, cyberattacks cost the United States economy upward of $109 billion; and
Whereas, A 5G wireless network is expected to bolster cybersecurity as well as the economy; and
Whereas, In order to retain its competitive edge and leadership role in the global market and information age, the United States must develop the 5G wireless network; and
Whereas, The President and Congress should collaborate with leading wireless companies to ensure that 5G wireless technology is utilized by consumers and businesses to drive America's economy and cybersecurity forward; and
Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper, and in the public interest, for this House to respectfully call upon the federal government to work with wireless companies to develop a 5G wireless network in order to improve the economy, network capabilities, and national security; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House respectfully urges the federal government to collaborate with wireless companies in the development of a 5th Generation wireless network in order to improve the national economy, network capabilities, and national security.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the President and Vice President of the United States, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, each member of the United States Congress elected from this State, and to each member of the board of directors of the Wireless Infrastructure Association.
STATEMENT
This resolution urges the federal government and wireless companies to develop a 5th Generation (5G) wireless network in order to improve the economy, network capabilities, and national security.
The 5G wireless network is the evolution of the existing 4th Generation Long-Term Evolution (4G LTE) wireless network that delivers wireless data to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The 5G wireless network is not a specific technology, but rather a set of standards and technologies that interoperate to meet wireless customer needs. A 5G wireless network is expected to improve cybersecurity and economic security, thus helping to prevent cyberattacks from foreign nations.
