SYNOPSIS

Urges New Jersey Lottery Commission to develop lottery game to promote horse racing in State.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the New Jersey Lottery Commission to develop a lottery game to promote horse racing in this State.

Whereas, The New Jersey State Lottery and the horse racing industry constitute two important components of the gaming industry in this State, and each is authorized by the State Constitution; and

Whereas, Since their authorization, gaming through lottery games and horse racing has contributed immensely to the economic vitality of the State, generating employment for thousands of New Jersey residents and supporting other industries and businesses that provide goods and services to these gaming industry components; and

Whereas, The lottery has further benefited the people of New Jersey by generating proceeds dedicated to the funding of education programs, and horse racing has directly helped to preserve open space in this State through the vitality of horse farms; and

Whereas, The horse racing industry in New Jersey currently faces increased competition from the gaming industry in the neighboring states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, where newly established electronic gaming machines and newly constructed racetracks continue to attract patrons who would normally come to wager at racetracks in New Jersey; and

Whereas, In the face of increasing competition from other states, it is imperative for the gaming industry in New Jersey to work together to collectively strengthen, enhance, and promote gaming in the State; and

Whereas, One opportunity to work together would be for the State Lottery to develop a lottery game to promote the horse racing industry in New Jersey, and thereby to encourage patrons to visit and enjoy Thoroughbred and Standardbred horse racing at the State's racetracks; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House respectfully urges the New Jersey Lottery Commission to develop a lottery game to promote Thoroughbred and Standardbred horse racing in this State.

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof shall be transmitted to the New Jersey Lottery Commission.
