CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.
A Joint Resolution designating the month of April of each year as "Tour the Shore Month" in the State of New Jersey.
Whereas, The State of New Jersey features 130 miles of ocean coastline, which includes beautiful white sand beaches, boardwalks, and quaint shore towns; and
Whereas, New Jersey residents and visitors to the State alike can enjoy the diverse array of attractions that the shore region provides, including the fun and excitement of Atlantic City; the Victorian architecture of Cape May; historic lighthouses and museums; boardwalks lined with shops, restaurants, rides, and arcades; delicious local seafood; breathtaking coastal scenery to enjoy by foot, bike, or boat; migratory bird watching; fishing and crabbing; beaches perfect for surfing, strolling or relaxing; scenic golf courses; and coastal nature preserves and trails; and
Whereas, The New Jersey shore is a unique natural, recreational, and economic resource, often recognized as a beautiful symbol of the State's identity and long-established as a critical component of the State's tourism industry; and
Whereas, Tourism is the third largest industry in New Jersey and is a vital component of the State's overall economy; and
Whereas, The economic value of New Jersey's tourism industry is larger than the entire gross national product of 97 countries; and
Whereas, Tourism enhances New Jersey's quality of life, as a new job is created for every 180 visitors to New Jersey, and seventy cents of every dollar brought into New Jersey through tourism is kept in the State; and
Whereas, New Jersey shore tourism is not limited to the summertime, and encouraging visitors to explore the shore during other seasons would benefit the State's economy; and
Whereas, Springtime, with beautiful weather yet fewer crowds on the roads and beaches, is the perfect season to come out and enjoy all that the New Jersey shore has to offer; and
Whereas, It is altogether fitting and appropriate to encourage State residents and visitors to experience and celebrate the many recreational, natural, and historic attractions that the New Jersey shore has to offer during the springtime season; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The month of April of each year is designated as "Tour the Shore Month" in the State of New Jersey in order to encourage State residents and visitors to experience and celebrate the many recreational, natural, and historic attractions that the New Jersey shore has to offer during the beautiful spring season.
2. The Governor is requested to annually issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe "Tour the Shore Month" with appropriate activities and programs.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This joint resolution designates the month of April of each year as "Tour the Shore Month" in New Jersey in order to encourage State residents and visitors to experience and celebrate the diverse array of recreational, natural, and historic attractions that the New Jersey shore has to offer during the spring season.
While most people typically think of summer as the primary season to visit the shore, springtime - which brings beautiful weather and the advantages of fewer crowds and lower-priced accommodations - is a perfect time to come out and enjoy all that the State's shore region has to offer. Tourism is a large and vital component of New Jersey's economy, and encouraging shore tourism during the spring season would be fitting, appropriate, and beneficial to the State and its residents.
