SYNOPSIS
Designates November 7 of each year as "Extra Life Day" in New Jersey.

A Joint Resolution permanently designating November 7 as "Extra Life Day" in New Jersey.
Whereas, Children's Specialized Hospital is the largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital in the country, and treats children throughout New Jersey born prematurely or with brain and spinal cord injury, autism, developmental delays, and life-changing illnesses; and
Whereas, The hospital provides specialized pediatric care to children, including outpatient therapies, physician specialty services, acute rehabilitation, medical day care, and long-term medical care, at its sites in Bayonne, Clifton, Egg Harbor Township, Fanwood, Hamilton, Mountainside, Newark, New Brunswick, Roselle Park, Toms River, and Warren; and
Whereas, The hospital also offers outreach programs to children and families of in the communities which it serves; and
Whereas, Children Specialized Hospital is an affiliate member of the Robert Wood Johnson Health System and an affiliate of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals; and
Whereas, Children's Miracle Network is an international non-profit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals and medical research, and promotes public awareness of children's health issues around the world; and
Whereas, Since its inception, Children's Miracle Network has raised more than $5 billion throughout the United States and Canada, with the assistance of a variety of corporate sponsors; and
Whereas, Children's Miracle Network fundraisers include an annual telethon, yearly dance marathons hosted by universities throughout the country, and Extra Life, a 24 hour video game marathon where gamers rally family and friends to support their play; and
Whereas, Extra Life was created in 2008 by members of the Sarcastic Gamer Community in honor of Victoria Enmon who was being treated for leukemia at a Children's Miracle Network hospital. After Victoria's death, members of the gaming community raised over $300,000 for the hospital that treated her during her illness; and
Whereas, In 2009, Extra Life was expanded to help raise money for all hospitals affiliated with the Children's Miracle Network, and since its creation, the video game marathon has raised $14 million nationally; and
Whereas, In 2014, 51,000 video gamers participated in the national Extra Life marathon, each raising an average of $200. In New Jersey, 742 gamers participated in the local Extra Life marathon, raising $117,650 for Children's Specialized Hospital; and
Whereas, The establishment of November 7 as "Extra Life Day" will raise public awareness about Children's Specialized Hospital, the Children's Miracle Network, and the innovative fundraiser that helps each provide specialized pediatric care to children in New Jersey, the United States, and throughout the world; now, therefore;
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. November 7 of each year is designated as "Extra Life Day" in New Jersey to raise public awareness about Children's Specialized Hospital, the Children's Miracle Network, and the innovative fundraiser that helps each provide specialized pediatric care to children in New Jersey, the United States, and throughout the world.
2. The Governor is respectfully requested to annually issue a proclamation recognizing November 7 as "Extra Life Day" in New Jersey and calling upon public officials, the citizens of the State, and other interested groups to observe the day with appropriate activities and programs.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This joint resolution designates November 7 of each year as "Extra Life Day" in New Jersey to raise public awareness about Children's Specialized Hospital, the Children's Miracle Network, and the innovative fundraiser that helps each provide specialized pediatric care to children in New Jersey, the United States, and throughout the world.
