STATEMENT

This resolution celebrates New Jersey native Scottie Scheffler for winning the 2022 Masters Tournament.

Scottie Scheffler was born on June 21, 1996, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and lived in Montvale, New Jersey until the age of six before moving to Texas.  As a child in New Jersey, Scheffler was introduced to the game of golf by his father and would often practice the game at Bergen Community College.  Scheffler's game was further enhanced when the family moved to Dallas, Texas and befriended hall of fame golfer Rick Smith.

As a student-athlete at the University of Texas, Scheffler won three national championships with the Longhorns and the "Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year" Award.  Following his college career, Scheffler turned pro and competed on the Korn Ferry Tour, winning two events and being named the Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year in 2019.  By 2020, Scheffler had earned his way on to the PGA Tour.  His 2020 rookie season was impressive enough to be named as the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

By the beginning of 2022, Scheffler had established himself as a major player on the tour, being ranked in the Top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking.  Prior to the 2022 Masters Tournament, Scheffler won three PGA Tour tournaments, catapulting himself to the World Number 1 ranking entering the Masters.

Scheffler proved that he was the clear World No. 1 during the Masters by shooting an impressive 10-under-par 278 during the tournament, winning by three strokes.  When Scheffler sunk his last putt on the 18th green and put on the coveted green jacket, he became the first New Jersey-born golfer to win the historic Masters Tournament.  The Legislature recognizes and congratulates Scottie Scheffler and his family on this historic achievement and his continued success as a professional golfer.
